I posted this on the main forums also, but it seems like probably some of the best data base people are maybe right here, and would know if something like this exists or is even possible ..

For those of us new and working on how to develop our own recipes, it seems like some brilliant person out there might know if it is possible to create a webbased or standalone "recipe maker" where you could experiment adding different resources etc to find combinations you like, then save those recipes, possibly to print out. That way we would know in advance also what resources to go out and dig, as opposed to just gathering and combining random materials.

I admit I am not a database person and I could be wildly underestimating how big of a challenge this would be -- or perhaps something like this is already made and either downloadable or usable from a website?

is a good idea

but here is what's on the main page

http://ballisticmystix.net/?p=patterns

doesn't really go into detail just quantity of materials needed

but is a start..to another application that could be built and implemented onto this.

it's not difficult to create it (it's math basically... +bit magic)... would i host it on bm site... probably not on ryzoms lifetime.

about figuring out reciepes... you either love it or hate it, no offline reciepe sim can help you there (even when there is a big red 'I WIN' button to get the reciepe).
.. and printing/saving... go old-school and use pen and paper

Well, I am not looking for an "I WIN" button or anyone's private recipes. I can't find a website about "concepts" and general rules in combining, I have spent literally probably 30-40 hours playing with crafting and every time I think I have some things figured out, I find out I really know almost nothing. And it's hard to practice and learn on your own when you can only juggle so many mats at a time in inventory, and hard to know which to go out digging after (although BM's chart of which mats have "highs" and "lows" in specific areas, helps a lot.)

I spent over an hour with a big batch of mats trying various combinations for a "nice" suit of homemade armor, finally after adding a pinch of this, subtracting a little of that, I had what i though was the best possible I could make with the mats I had on hand. It reminds me a lot of cooking, and I really do actually enjoy the process. It reminds me also of an artist blending colors.

Then, since I now had a lot of leftovers, I figured I would just combine the leftovers willy-nilly just to use up the mats. And to my utter embarassment, the "dump everything together and hit MAKE" junk suit ended up with better stats than the one I spent over an hour micro managing every single mat for.

Obviously I am not understanding some concepts. There seems to be no website devoted to explaining concepts. An offline "organizer" that let me play with hypothetical combinations, and give me an idea of which resources I want to keep on hand, would probably make some things become clearer for me that are now deep and dark mysteries ... I know I am still a novice, will be for months to come, and two years from now I will still be learning. But right now I am cooking in the dark.

In the kitchen, I rarely follow anyone else's recipes. I like to make up my own. But I generally have an overall idea of "how it all works" and what happens if I add a pinch, or a cup, of pepper. Or what lemons and cinnamon will do to the final outcome.

I consider this more of an educational tool. Not an "I win" button, or something that would destroy what is clearly an art form as much as a science. But even beginner artists sometimes benefit from "How To Draw A Horse" lessons, as far as understanding certain underlying processes.

Anyway thanks for letting me ramble a little. I am not asking anyone to make something like this, it just seemed something that a programmer type might enjoy playing with and so I thought perhaps something of this sort might already exist.

There have been some attempts at a generator. None is perfect. Alot of crafting is trial and error. I'm not much of a crafter so I know almost nothing.Best way is talk to a Master crafter and ask for some pointers. An amp crafter pointed me to using fine mats for shaft as it lets the amber "shine through". -Kil

You know I was thinking I would love an "ingame workshop for newbie crafters" where some of the best crafters in the game could tell us some starting pointers that we might not discover on our own -- like the relationship between a fine shaft and amber for amps in your example.

Not their own secrets but just some more general "interesting" things they have learned and would like to pass on to the new generation of young crafter-wannabes...

well, yeah. it's no craft sim if it dont have 'i win' automatic reciepe finder button . may as well be ingame and chat while doing the million clicks hehe.

And it's hard to practice and learn on your own when you can only juggle so many mats at a time in inventory, and hard to know which to go out digging after (although BM's chart of which mats have "highs" and "lows" in specific areas, helps a lot.)

there is also 'Detailed view' on each stat group that lists ingame pixel values (some numbers are wrong, read the endnote for details). Maybe numbers will give you better idea what's happening
there is 'something else' than plain math behind the precraft numbers, so dont go crazy punching numbers in excel hehe

An igame craft seminar sounds like a good idea. I'll talk to some other GLs and see if we can do something-Kil

Thank you Kilgore, I would be very excited to have a chance to attend a crafting workshop like that.

And thanks to Anasule because his post helped me very very much to understand.

That topics draws my attention as well.
Have you got at least any hints on the crafting formula for us?
